Today I am featuring part one of a two part wedding story. Back in August, Juliana and Mike held a beautiful wedding celebration over the weekend with all of their friends at Juliana's family's private mountain retreat complete with cabins in Buffalo Creek, Colorado. Long time readers might recognize the location even though it's a private home because my good friends Meghan and Emily were lucky enough to get married at the family home during fall a couple of years ago. It's an incredible place for family and friends to gather and so much fun stuff around the property to keep the kids entertained. Friday night the family held their annual square dance party along with dinner served by the incredibly delicious Phoenecian Kabob restaurant (located at Colfax and Ivanhoe in Denver, go check them out sometime, you won't regret it!). They have been hosting this square dance every summer and this year was even more special since they combined it with the wedding festivities. Juliana's dad's long time friend was the square dance caller and he wrangled the huge group of family and friends into squares and lines and circles and had them spinning each other all over the dance hall cabin. It was the perfect Friday night pre-wedding activity. What better way to meet other friends and wedding guests than by do-si-do-ing around a big cabin together?

Joe contacted me at the beginning of the summer to look into getting his family on the schedule for some updated family portraits of all of them together. He and his siblings are all grown up now and as we all know, life can get pretty hectic and it's not easy to schedule the whole family. It feels like we didn't get that much rain this summer but poor Joe, every time we did get a crazy rainstorm it happened to be on the day that we had scheduled his family's photo session! I think his family wins the record for most number of reschedules due to weather that I've ever had. Even on our 3rd time trying to get them done, we met up and the rain began. We had to wait it out about 30-40 min before we could even begin the session and I was so afraid we were going to just have to call it and try again on another day. But thankfully, the rain finally cleared up and we were able to get some great photos for them afterward. It's usually not a big deal to schedule outdoor pictures here in Colorado due to our 300+ days of sunshine reputation but sometimes the weather has a mind of its own. We started our photos up at Gross Reservoir in Boulder which has beautiful mountain views and forested areas. And with very limited light left at sunset we managed to squeeze in a 2nd location at Lost Gulch Overlook which also has pretty mountain views and looks out over the City of Boulder as well. I really wanted to fit in this location for them since I love the dramatic rocky landscape there. Despite the weather attempting to ruin a perfectly good family photography outing, they were total champs and I love what we were able to get in our shortened timeframe! Joe, thank you to you and your family for waiting so patiently through the rainstorm to get these! I hope you love them!
Ihave been so excited about Carole & Chad's wedding ever since we first met up to discuss it last fall at New Terrain Brewery in Golden. They were such an easy going and fun couple to meet with so obviously I was already on board, but knowing that it was going to take place in Crested Butte, Colorado had me very excited too. Despite being what I call an "almost-native" (that's someone who has been in Colorado since she was 3 but was not born here in case you are wondering, haha) I had never been to Crested Butte. It's definitely one of those places you have a to make it a point to visit since it's a bit off the beaten path and you don't really drive through it to get anywhere else. And I'm also one of those "Almost-Natives" who isn't super into winter sports because I'm kind of a baby about the cold and it's hard to find the time to go up when it's not for work. So I had just never thought to make a trip all the way out. But I wish Crested Butte had been more on my radar because holy hell, it's a gorgeous little slice of heaven right here on earth! When you are there, every direction you turn is beautiful because you are literally surrounded by mountains on all sides. And of course, Carole and Chad's wedding was in July which is prime wildflower season too so the rolling hills are covered in them.
We did their first look and some portraits by the Slate River near the Oh Be Joyful recreation area and we also found a pretty cool little spot to get the iconic Crested Butte mountain in the backdrop for some of the photos near Peanut Lake. The ceremony took place at the beautiful Mountain Wedding Garden at Crested Butte's Town Hall over on the ski resort side of town. It was a gorgeous place to say their vows in front of their family and friends and my only regret was that we didn't have much time for portraits there due to the incoming rain storm. But it held off for the ceremony so I can't complain too much. The reception was held at Bonez which is a super cool looking tequila bar and restaurant right in the heart of downtown Crested Butte. I have to give huge props to Carole and Chad's wedding planner, Ciera Freson from Lucky Penny for being so down to earth and easy to work with but also getting the job done! It's not easy to find both qualities in a wedding planner! She and her assistant even managed to get all of the guests lined up perfectly outside of Bonez for a super cute confetti send off with Mt. Crested Butte in the backdrop. That was probably one of my favorite parts of the day since it's always hilarious to see all of the people who love the couple, attack them with pretty sparkly things! And it couldn't have happened in a prettier place!
After the reception, we had originally planned to take the Red Lady Express Lift up the mountain to end the day with a few more epic portraits, but by this point, the rain was getting increasingly insistent upon itself and so we opted to just stick to getting a handful around the downtown area of Crested Butte before we called it a day. And what an incredible day it was! Congratulations, Carole & Chad! I hope you enjoy your time as newlyweds this next year. And I will always be grateful to you both for giving me a great excuse to head out to Crested Butte. What a wonderful place!

It's been such an awesome summer so far. Every week I've had the opportunity to head up I-70 to meet a family vacationing here in beautiful mountains of Colorado. I recently had the pleasure of meeting this family who opted to meet me halfway from Vail in Georgetown. We were going to try and get some photos in the cute little town itself before heading up Guanella Pass, but we had a wee little 5 month old and they weren't sure how long she'd be able to last for picures. So we opted to head for the nature filled river area instead of starting in town. We had gotten our first photos done when all of a sudden the sky opened up and started raining. We waited it out for a bit in our cars and luckily it passed and we were able to finish what we started. I love what we were able to get for them near South Clear Creek and the beautiful forest filled with nice evergreens and aspen trees. Their sweet baby girl was just so cute with her furrowed eyebrows. She is going to love looking back at these one day and seeing all the love her family has for her.
