I met Meredith & Greg this past summer after Greg contacted me to see if I might be able to help him pull off photographing the proposal he wanted to do for his then-girlfriend, Meredith. They would be in town looking for a place to live since they were moving to the Boulder area soon and he had heard from a friend of his who went to college at University of Colorado that the Lost Gulch Overlook is a really pretty place. Of course I said yes and we developed a fairly in-depth plan to pull it off which involved me fake photographing a friend’s daughter for her fake senior photos while hopefully keeping it a surprise from Meredith. Their proposal went off so well that they decided to contact me again about their wedding in Massachusetts. I was so chuffed that they were even considering me for their wedding since I mostly photograph weddings here in Colorado. But of course, it’s the off season here in Colorado making it even easier for me to say yes to a destination wedding out in the Boston area. Bonus, I have never been to Boston and neither has Geoff so it was a no-brainer decision for us.
While I have photographed “destination weddings” in as exotic locales as Santa Fe and even a cute little farm in Nebraska, (absolutely not trash talkin’ there, that farm was ADORABLE!) this was my first one where I would have to fly with my equipment. At first I was worried about how I would get what I need out to Boston but then realized that Southwest flies direct (2 free checked bags? Yes please) and that part ended up not being a hassle at all. I did have to buy a step-stool though. One thing I know about myself and photographing weddings after all of these years? A step-stool is a must have item in my wedding gear.
We scheduled our flight three days out from the wedding just because I can be a nervous nellie when it comes to wedding commitments and I wanted to make sure we could figure out a way to be at this wedding come hell or high water if the weather went south. Afterall, I know next to nothing about New England and Boston but I do know they are known for pretty ugly winter weather and wanted to make sure we were prepared. I am happily reporting that we did NOT have to make a cross country drive out to Boston from Denver in early February! However, upon arriving in Boston, I was a little horrified at how cold it was. I know, I know, I really should have known to expect that. And I thought I did! But, somehow near zero temps in Boston just feel worse than they do here in Denver. The first full day we spent wandering around the city, I was legit getting scared for how we would manage to get a single photo of Greg & Meredith outside. The day of Greg & Meredith’s wedding was marginally warmer and we were able to squeeze in almost 3 minutes (I had to check the file data to see how long we were able to last outside, haha) of outdoor photography time. Their sweet little doggie, PJ, was shaking so badly that I just had to cut it off and get us back inside before the guilt ate away at me too much! Bravo to Greg & Meredith for braving that wind so that we could catch that incredible view of the Boston skyline for them in the backdrop!
It was such a pleasure for me to witness all of the love both from Greg and Meredith for each other but from all of their friends and family too. People came from all over the US to spend time with them on their wedding day. The love they have for this couple was so plain to see. I saw it in the stunning hand-drawn wedding invitation created by one of Meredith’s bridesmaids (seriously, check out Aprajita’s intricately gorgeous work in the photo below!) to the heartfelt speeches from both the rehearsal and the wedding day and to the fact that everyone danced on that dance floor the entire evening, sore feet be damned! These are the things that make weddings so special and it’s my pleasure to share just a small visual heart of their event in the photos below.
