The couple featured on the journal this afternoon is the cutest and so photogenic! Ariel got in touch with me to talk about getting some maternity portraits created with her husband, Stephen. She's planning to use the photos for her baby shower invitations which I love and think is an awesome idea. We were originally thinking about heading up to Lost Gulch Overlook in Boulder but we got quite a snowstorm this last week and decided to skip the perilous rocky terrain up there and do City Park instead. These two live in the area and Ariel grew up near there too so it's a pretty special place for them. It also happens to be my favorite park in Denver because the views from the east side of the downtown Denver skyline and the pretty mountains stacked behind it are lovely. Of course, you have to be ok with being surrounded by geese and their incredibly prolific amounts of poo but I just consider it to be part of City Park's charm at this point. During warmer weather I like to work with about an hour for maternity sessions, but because it was pretty chilly I decided to push it to just 45 minutes before sunset so that this poor couple wouldn't have to freeze outdoors for too long. By the end, we had discovered a beautiful glass sculpture on the south side of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science which I thought would look amazing once the sky went blue so we actually pushed the session a little longer past sunset and into twilight. I am so pleased that we did and I can't thank Ariel and Steven enough for putting up with my lies of "Ok, last one!" when really I had more than one more photo to create for them. Pro tip: never trust a photographer when she says "All right, this is the last one!" Truth is, the first time you hear that come out of their mouth you should expect a handful of more photos afterward. It's a disease, we just can't help it! But, wait until you see the gorgeousness of that blue sky paired with Ariel's beautiful blue lace dress and you'll understand why we just keep up those lies!

Icannot believe it's already that time of the year when I sort through all of my favorite photos taken throughout the previous wedding and portrait season to curate my absolute favorite shots from each session and wedding. It's usually not too difficult to narrow it down to a handful of favorites from each photography shoot since that's what I do for all of them for the sneak peek blog posts. But only getting to choose 1 out of all of them? That's not easy at all! But I like the challenge and it's so cool to look back and see all of the great people I got to meet and the ones that I have developed relationships with and see how much they've changed throughout the years. I also love creating this year in review journal entry since the photos help me relive all of the happy memories that were created with all of them. In 2017 I found myself driving up from Denver to the beautiful mountains of Colorado more than ever to photograph all of the families on vacation in this gorgeous state. This year I continued to mix in various headshot sessions of the lifestyle variety meaning on location and showcasing a more environmental approach to the traditional business headshots normally seen. I find that my high school senior work is also along this same vein mixing the traditional headshot type of photography with photos that are more environmental. One of the best new places I discovered for this type of work is in the Rino/North Denver area but I also enjoyed photographing more seniors in the high country this season. I also greatly enjoyed reconnecting with couples whose weddings I photographed years ago who are now growing their family. And speaking of photographing weddings, I had so many kick-ass couples this year that I definitely feel spoiled! I photographed my first wedding in Crested Butte which I have somehow never had the chance to visit before despite growing up here in Colorado and it was incredible! I returned to some of my favorite places like the Wedgewood on Boulder Creek, Arrowhead Golf Course, Denver Botanic Gardens and I even got to photograph another family wedding on the same private property in Buffalo Creek. I was also privileged enough to photographed some new beautiful venues like Church Ranch Event Center here in the metro area, Della Terra Chateaux in Estes Park, and a lovely little ranch called B Lazy 2 Ranch in Fraser, Colorado. I was also so excited that I finally had the opportunity to photograph the Barn at Evergreen Memorial Park which I've always wanted to do and it was a derby girl wedding no less so that made it even more fun for me to do. There are plenty more exciting opportunities I was lucky enough to cover this past year but in the interest of getting to the good stuff (the photos!) I'll end here.
Thank you SO MUCH to all of my marvelous clients who made 2017 such a beautiful year for me. I can't express my appreciation to all of you enough! I hope that I get to reconnect with many of you in 2018.
Enjoy the 2017 best of the best photos below!
I'll end with my favorite vacation photo from 2017:) I wish you all a very happy new year! Best wishes for 2018!
Iam so excited to share this absolutely gorgeous couple's maternity session photography on the journal today. Chris and Corissa live in Florida but were here visiting with Chris's family in Colorado where he grew up. They are expecting a baby girl and are planning to name her Winter (Shout out to all the "time of year" names out there!) so I am stoked that we finally got some snow on the ground for their pictures. It's been way too dry here on the Front Range of Colorado for this time of year but we just got a little bit of snow just in time for their maternity session. It has all but disappeared down in Denver where I live, but luckily Lost Gulch is up into the mountains of Boulder on Flagstaff Road so it was still cold and high enough for it to stick around for awhile. It definitely made for a beautiful winter wonderland feel in the pictures but we had to work pretty quickly since it was freezing outside. I wanted to take them down a path that I normally use up at Lost Gulch but discovered that it was just too slippery and snowy to safely get up where the views were. We turned around and used the more popular area at Lost Gulch Overlook as the sun set and the sky changed into a lovely soft pastel colors. Corissa and Chris looked amazing in their maroon red coordinated clothing for the session. I absolutely loved Corissa's long form fitting mermaid dress which showed off her beautiful mama-to-be curves with just enough extra flowy fabric on the end to add some drama. And her gorgeous gold jewelry and bright winning smile was the cherry on top! It was really hard for me to narrow down some favorites from this one, but I managed select the ones shown below. Congratulations to Corissa and Chris expecting their first baby girl!
I can't even pick a favorite from this session, but I'm ending with this one because I love Corissa's beautiful smile and this sweet tender moment between her and Chris!
Becky is one of my oldest friends. We met forever ago in high school marching band where she played the flute very well and I played the clarinet quite badly, haha. We didn't know anything about football back then so we would spend the entire game going over SNL skits like the Ambiguously Gay Duo instead of paying attention to the game and every so often running through the school's fight song or a catchy marching band version of Santana's Oye como va (which I have to say was super repetitive and boring to play when you are a 3rd stringer crappy clarinet player). But I digress. We are much older now and still get to hang out with each other every so often. We've gone through lots of life events together now varying from "owning" the city of Denver at various nightspots to being a bridesmaid at her wedding. But her biggest life change to date is just around the corner and I couldn't be more happy for her and her husband, James. They'll be bringing home a brand new baby girl to round out their household of tiny yappy dogs this fall? To celebrate this special time in their life we headed over to Kountze Lake behind the Lakewood Heritage Center for their maternity photos. I had completely forgotten this place existed but it's a pretty neat little nature area nestled along a super busy stretch of Wadsworth near Belmar. It was the perfect easy location for us to meet and create these pretty photos of them together. I can't get over how cute Becky is as a pregnant lady. And I cannot wait to meet their daughter in just a couple short months! Congratulations, Becky and James!
