Website: The Greenbriar Inn Wedding Website
The Greenbriar Inn restaurant is one of Boulder’s best fine dining establishments and they have been hosting weddings there for quite some time. This gorgeous restaurant wedding reception venue is located just a short drive north of Boulder at the intersection of Left Hand Canyon Drive and Highway 36. This off the beaten path Boulder Restaurant is awesome for weddings with 20 acres or beautiful land and multiple pretty garden areas on that land. I love the quaint country Inn feel of this place. It almost feels like a place you would stumble across while backpacking across Europe and unexpectedly have the best meal of your entire trip there.
The Greenbriar Inn is over 100 years old now and once upon a time it was a home, a post office, and a general store all in one! Back then this part of Colorado was known as Altona and The Greenbriar was the place where miners working up in Jamestown would come down and get their supplies and their mail. In 1967, it was purchased by restaurateurs and has been serving up award-winning food ever since. In fact, if the food being served for your wedding is one of the most important things to you, I would definitely take a look at hosting your wedding at the Greenbriar. I’ve had the pleasure of eating a lot of wedding food in my time and the Greenbriar Inn’s food stands out in my memory as some of the best food I’ve ever had!
When you book a wedding at the Greenbriar Inn you’ll get a professional on-site coordinator to help you plan, 1.5 hours of set up time, 1 hour rehearsal, lots of parking, dancing in the sunroom (with other options available for an extra fee), and 20 acres of beautiful grounds to use for your photos. As mentioned above, The Greenbriar Inn restaurant is located on a very large property with some beautiful spaces to use on your wedding day. I particularly love the landscaped garden areas and the pretty waterfall pond on the south side of the venue. I’ve photographed many weddings here so below I’ve done my best to share photos of each of the spaces that are available, a brief description of what you’ll find at the Greenbriar, and give my personal thoughts and opinions about the various Greenbriar wedding venue spaces.
My favorite thing about Greenbriar Inn weddings is all of the gorgeous outdoor space that’s available to use so I thought I’d start with the Cabin Lawn outdoor ceremony site located on the west side of the venue. (Scratch that, my actual #1 favorite thing about Greenbriar Inn restaurant weddings is the food! I’m planning to take my husband on a date night here soon!) The Cabin Lawn is named that because directly north of this pretty green lawn is an old stone cabin that’s like a little “mini me” version of the main restaurant’s stone building. This is the largest outdoor wedding ceremony space that the Greenbriar offers and can seat up to 300 guests with pretty nice views of the foothill mountains. There are also lots of trees and shrubbery as well as a more natural overgrown prairie grass style field once you get past the manicured lawn area. In the past, I have also used this nice mountain view area for formal pictures at weddings I’ve photographed at the Greenbriar Inn.
If you are hosting a smaller wedding, you can choose to host your wedding ceremony on the South Lawn which is just outside the Sun Room portion of the Greenbriar meaning the beautiful glass doors are all along one side of this space while the rest is a beautiful green lawn with tons of pretty gardens along the edges. You’ll be able to host up to 100 guests for your ceremony in this outdoor garden space. I have also created some really nice formal pictures using these gardens and it’s perfect for hosting an outdoor cocktail hour too.
There is also the Fountain Patio which is located on the west side of the Greenbriar Inn. In my experience, this outdoor area is less used (probably because it’s not right outside the Sun Room which is a very popular indoor section of the restaurant) but is also quite pretty. There are some gardens and a nice, large, mature tree providing shade with little wood benches built around it. There is also a pretty, birdbath style fountain and a flagstone patio area right alongside the lawn. You’ll be able to seat up to 80 guests for an outdoor ceremony in this space and it’s also popular for hosting cocktail hours.
If you walk down the Greenbriar Driveway to the southernmost edge of the property, to the west of the parking area there is a lovely little garden area with large boulders, lots of plants, and a beautiful little waterfall that falls into a pond. This is a section of the Greenbriar that not everyone finds since it’s a little more removed from the main restaurant building, but it’s well worth the short walk to get to it since I find that it’s easiest to get the best mountain views over in this area of the Greenbriar Inn. It’s one of my favorite areas to get portraits at when photographing at this wedding venue.
There are a couple different indoor reception spaces and most weddings end up using the lower level with the main dining room to host their wedding dinner. The indoor restaurant space has a cozy old world feel with lots of dark wood beams, dark green carpet, & floral damask style printed material on the booth seating. In the main dining room on the the first floo, you’ll be able to seat up to 130 guests if you need to do an indoor ceremony and you’ll be able to seat between 80-190 guests for a seated dinner if you include the sunroom which is often used in conjunction with the main dining room. The Sunroom is located right next to the main dining room and is my favorite of the indoor space at the Greenbriar because it has the most natural light coming in from the multiple french doors that lead out to the garden areas of the South Lawn. I most often see the Sunroom being used as an overflow space as well as a dance floor after dinner but it can also be booked for a smaller wedding reception. It fits between 20-55 guests for a reception.
The upstairs dining room at the Greenbriar is quite similar to the main level dining room. It’s slightly smaller though with room to seat up to 150 guests. The highlight of the upstairs dining room is that there is a nice outdoor balcony that allows guests to look down at the gardens of the south lawn as well as take in the views of the foothills looking south toward Boulder. This upstairs balcony space can be booked for small, intimate weddings or be used alongside the upstairs dining room. There is room for up to 50 guests in this space.
The most intimate space available. It’s extremely dark (natural light photographers, beware! It’s one of the darkest spaces I’ve photographed in) but does have a very small amount of natural light coming in from the windows on the west wall. The Little Room at the Greenbriar Inn can seat between 6-24 people and would best be used for those hosting a very small family wedding dinner. I usually see this space being used as a bridal getting ready room but if I’m being honest, I would recommend booking a hotel suite that has more space and natural light coming in if you would like good photos from that portion of your wedding day. However, if that’s not an option, I do love that the Greenbriar has this room for you if you need it!
I hope that these photos and descriptions have helped give you a good idea of what you’ll find at this historic Boulder wedding venue. I would love to be your Greenbriar Inn wedding photographer! I’ve been photographing weddings in Colorado since 2006 and would love to photograph yours.
