Guanella Pass Family Photography During Fall Color Season in Colorado
Today’s journal entry features a beautiful Guanella Pass family photography session. As much as I love my mountain meadow location on Squaw Pass Road, I also love how gorgeous the fall color looks up near Georgetown, Colorado along Guanella Pass. Plus, it’s always good to switch up locations to get some fresh perspective and keep the creative juices flowing. Jenny actually first got in touch with me earlier in the summer before anyone but photographers were planning out their fall schedules, haha. And it’s a good thing she did because she was hoping for a weekend session in late September since that’s when the fall color in Colorado’s mountains is usually right at peak. I do weddings too so it’s not always easy for me to fit in families on the weekends since that’s prime time for weddings, especially during September and early October. But, I actually had her date open this year so we went ahead and scheduled for a weekend session on Guanella Pass.
Guanella Pass Leaf Peeping Family Pictures near Georgetown
I have actually done weekend sessions along this stretch of mountain road in the past and maybe I was just lucky when I went those other times, but it was pretty quiet and we had the place to ourselves for the most part. However, this year it was an absolute MAD HOUSE up there! I have actually never seen anything like it. I’m not one to make a special fall drive “leaf peeping” trip since I generally get my fill of fall color just from what I do for a living. So maybe that’s why I have never experienced crowds like that before, but man, I was not expecting the sheer number of people up there at all. Still, we managed to squeeze our way into parking areas along the road to capture some family photos for them in some incredibly beautiful locations. It actually ended up being a good thing since it forced us to get creative about which areas to use which I may not have found if all of my normal sections on the pass were free.
This family was also so easy going and I had a ton of fun hanging out with them and their awesome daughter. She was quite the trooper too. I always schedule my sessions to take place right before sunset. During fall in the Colorado mountains it can get quite chilly and she managed to last quite awhile. I love all of the cuddly picture we got of her with her parents. I have my personal favorites all retouched and ready to share with the world below!
