Denver Botanic Gardens is by far one of the best wedding venues in the Denver area. There are so many beautiful backdrops available throughout the gardens that I don’t think as a photographer I could ever exhaust all of them when creating beautiful pictures with couples getting married there. Some of my personal favorite locations inside Denver Botanic Gardens have got to be the Circle Gate, the Monet Pool, and the historic green solarium in the Woodland Mosaic Garden. This is for sure the premier Denver botanical gardens wedding venue. It's one of the most beloved botanic gardens in the country with a high number of visitors every year. I love photographing here so much that I buy the annual photography permit so that I can offer it as an option for my portrait clients too. Be sure to scroll through the pictures above to see a nice selection of Denver Botanic Gardens wedding photos from their York Street central Denver location. If you are curious about getting married at the Chatfield Farms location, you can find more info about that spot HERE.
Denver Botanic Gardens is huge with 24 acres located between the pretty Cheesman Park neighborhood and the Congress Park neighborhood of Denver, CO. Because Denver Botanic Gardens is so large, they can easily host multiple weddings on one day since each area where weddings are hosted is fairly private and they do a great job of blocking off the wedding venue spaces from the public during the designated rental times. Since it's such a large wedding venue with many different options for areas that can be rented for a wedding, I'll go over some of the different garden and indoor venue spaces they offer below.
Denver Botanic Gardens has options for both outdoor and indoor weddings. Since it’s a garden wedding venue, the most popular spots are obviously the outdoor locations but they have some indoor options available as well. In the following section I’ll talk about some of the various outdoor garden spaces that you can book for your wedding day at Denver Botanic Gardens
My favorite location to host your wedding ceremony location at Denver Botanic Gardens is the Woodland Mosaic Garden with the really cute and interesting looking solarium. I did a little internet search and discovered that this gorgeous green colored solarium was actually commissioned by Disney and built in England but never made its way to the Disney theme parks. It ended up being bought by a woman from Illinois but she passed away before it could be built at her home. Her husband’s son ended up contacting Denver Botanic Gardens to see if they would be interested and luckily for couples looking for beautiful greenhouse wedding spaces in Denver they were!
This beautiful little structure only works well for couples who are hosting smaller, intimate weddings since it can hold a max of 75 people (standing room) or 50 guests seated in a theater style arrangement. For a reception, 40 seated guests can be seated inside the solarium. If you’re willing to expand your seating to the exterior too, it can hold up to 60 guests for a wedding reception. I’ve photographed at the Woodland Mosaic Solarium quite a bit and I personally think it can get a bit tight with too many people so it would be better for those having a smaller wedding. I also think it would be a really gorgeous location for an afternoon bridal shower tea luncheon type of party. It’s nice and shady in this area of the gardens and I personally really love the round vintage style pendant lights that hang from its ceiling. To see some real weddings at the Woodland Mosaic Garden with the Solarium at Denver Botanic Gardens please scroll to the bottom of this page where you’ll find some examples of this very unique and beautiful wedding venue.
If you love the historic green solarium but it’s too small to host your wedding you might want to check out the Orangery option instead. It’s a beautiful glass European Renaissance-style greenhouse with a lot more room in it than the solarium. It can fit up to 100 people with all of the tables inside and up to 150 if you seat some of them outdoors. If you opt for no seating at all at your wedding you can host up to 225 guests in this space though I personally think that would be a bit tight unless you utilize all of the space on the outdoor patio next to it as well. If you want some color at your winter wedding I could see this being an excellent option for you since it is colorful in there year-round with windows that look into their greenhouse where they have a ton of different plants growing.
I really like this space because it feels like an outdoor wedding venue while also providing cover in case of bad weather. One of my favorite features is that it has a wall of windows with garage door style doors that can open up and let in a breeze. I’ve actually been able to still get cool outdoor looking photos for my couples even when it was raining pretty hard because of this feature. My couples were able to stand inside protected from the rain while they still had a beautiful garden backdrop just outside of the Orangery. We don’t have to worry about rain too much here but it’s a nice feature to have for the rare days that we do get a storm rolling through.
The Annuals Garden and Pavilion is one of the newer wedding locations at Denver Botanic Gardens. There is a large modern styled canopy at the center of the gardens which provides a little respite from the sun or showers. I love all of the colorful plants that surround this space and it even has a couple of nice waterlily gardens at the edge. I always make it a point to stop by this space when I’m photographing portraits at Denver Botanic Gardens because it’s one of the most colorful garden areas in the entire place. I like that the Annuals Garden area of Denver Botanic Gardens has the wide open covered space to host a dinner or a wedding ceremony but it also has a lot of walkways and little spaces throughout it so that guests can wander around and get away from the crowd for a moment here and there to take in the beauty.
This is one of the larger spaces you can rent at Denver Botanic Gardens too so if you were hoping to have more guests at your wedding you’ll likely be able to hold all of them in this space. There is room for up to 200 guests at your ceremony here and up to 120 guests if you want to host your seated reception in this space too. If you don’t need seating for either the ceremony or the reception, you can host 240 guests in the Annuals Garden Pavilion. I have some examples of real weddings at the Annuals Gardens at the bottom of this page so please keep scrolling if you’d like to see more photos from this colorful garden venue.
If you want to host a large wedding but also want it outdoors the Amphitheater is an excellent option for you because it’s the largest outdoor space that Denver Botanic Gardens offers to rent for weddings. It is a huge tent which can be opened on all sides on nice days and closed off when it’s colder. And I particularly love the beautiful twinkle lights covering the ceiling. This space used to have a lovely Midsummer’s Night Dream quality to it with a clear ceiling letting moonlight shine in and surrounded by trees and gardens. But, the current tent is not clear so you’ll just have to enjoy the surroundings you can see from the sides. You can host up to 600 people at a seated reception and 1,300 at your reception if you go without seating. For theater style seating you can fit up to 1,200 guests
If you want another option for your larger outdoor wedding ceremony at Denver Botanic Gardens there's the perennial favorite “Romantic Gardens.” Boasting west-facing views (imagine if you held your ceremony right at sunset!) and tons of roses this is a classic garden choice for your wedding and is perfect for those who need to host a large amount of guests. I especially love that Denver Botanic Gardens also seems to block off the Oval Garden area when the Romantic Gardens space is being used for a wedding but you’ll want to confirm this with them directly as it may not be something they always do. I love it because the Oval Garden is one of my absolute favorite areas inside Denver Botanic Gardens and I make sure to utilize this space at all of my portrait sessions there.
The Romantic Gardens can hold up to 250 seated guests. I love the perfectly edged trees all in a row creating a really lovely symmetry. It’s easy to see why this garden has been a favorite for couples throughout the years. My only word of caution for couples interested in booking it for their wedding is that the harsh Colorado sunshine coming in from the west can be a bit tricky for guests since it can shine directly into their faces. If you continue scrolling to the end of this page I have more photos from a real wedding at the Romantic Gardens.
Another great outdoor option for medium sized weddings is the South African Plaza. This area features a nice wooden trellis and even has a nearby babbling brook. This beautiful outdoor space has room for 80-90 guests.
Smaller weddings can also be held at the Water Garden Gazebo which ideally places you right next to one of the prettiest areas in the entire garden (the Monet Pool!) It’s a simple little circular wood gazebo surrounded by pretty potted plants on all sides. It can host 20-40 guests depending on your seating arrangement. In my experience, having more guests seated inside the gazebo did make getting a good angle of the ceremony inside the gazebo more difficult because it was hard to move around. If you would like to see a real wedding hosted at the Water Garden Gazebo please keep going to the bottom of this page. I have one linked there.
The West Terrace wedding tent at Denver Botanic Gardens is situated right next to the Orangery (meaning you can combine the two if you need more space) and the Monet Pool on the west end of the greenhouse complex. This area can host your ceremony and your reception. A couple of nice features about the West Terrace is that there are misting sprayers for hot summer weddings and beautiful twinkle lights for added romantic ambience. This area can host up to 250 seated guests for the ceremony and between 175-250 guests at the reception depending on your seating arrangements.
I just recently learned that Denver Botanic Gardens is now utilizing the Welcome Garden area of the gardens as a space you can rent for your wedding. I love this space because it has some really pretty flowers and water features in it. I actually often end up getting some of my first photos or my last photos at portrait sessions I do here because it’s where a “secret” little walkway ends up that I like to use as a little shortcut at the gardens. It’s right off of York Street next to the gift shop/ticket entrance area so you would probably want to use it as more of a cocktail hour kind of space but it’s really pretty and I can see why Denver Botanic Gardens decided to add it as a potential rental area. You’ll be able to host a 175 person standing reception in the Welcome Garden space. The photos I have above are not from weddings, but from portrait sessions I’ve done in the Welcome Gardens section of Denver Botanic Gardens to give you more of an idea of what it looks like there.
The following spaces are what the Denver Botanic Gardens have to offer for indoor rental venues for weddings and events. Due to the gardens being located right in the middle of a neighborhood they do have some restrictions regarding music at your wedding reception which is why some couples might opt for one of these indoor reception spaces to transition over to the amplified music and dance party portion of their wedding day. One feature I really like about all three of the indoor wedding reception venue options at Denver Botanic Gardens is that they all have nice tall ceilings. I have some information about the indoor spaces at Denver Botanic Gardens that allow amplified music in them below.
The largest indoor space at the Denver Botanic Gardens is Mitchell Hall where you can fit up to 300 guests for a seated wedding reception. If you wanted to just utilize the space for the dance party you can host up to 550 guests without tables. This space has a gorgeous domed ceiling covered in a checkered square design. You can also opt to do different colored lights to truly create a look that is unique to you and your wedding. It has a stage where you can have either a DJ or a wedding band set up to keep your dance party going. Right outside of Mitchell hall there is a place called the Sensory Garden which is a great little hidden place for an outdoor cocktail hour too. If you’d like to see a real wedding at Mitchell Hall, keep scrolling to the bottom of this page where I have a link to more photos.
Gates Hall is a pretty unique looking space with concrete walls with intricate woodwork on three sides and the north wall with floor to ceiling windows. Right outside of Gates Hall is the Gates Garden Court which has incredibly high ceilings and nice natural light pouring through the windows on the north side of the space though it’s not entirely clear if this area is also still available as part of wedding rentals so you’ll want to check with Denver Botanic Gardens directly about that. There is room for up to 90 seated guests in this space at your reception. In the past, the Gates Garden Court was available to be rented along side the Gates Hall as well which is through double doors on the west wall of this space.
Right outside the doors of the Boettcher Memorial Tropical Conservatory is a two story space called Marnie’s Pavilion where couples can host an indoor reception (and sometimes a ceremony depending on the time of year). There is a really cool waterfall feature right in the center of the room on the lower level which is covered in exotic tropical plants. It’s a pretty great way to keep a garden feel when you need to take the party indoors.
There is room for up to 80 seated guests in the upstairs balcony area and you can fit up to 120 guests if you use both floors for tables. You’ll be able to fit up to 150 guests in this space if it’s standing room only. 75-100 guests in this space for a reception. One thing I noticed is that while there is a bit of space for dancing, there’s really not that much room for it. So if having a big dance party is a really high priority for you, Marnie’s Pavilion might not be the best option available at Denver Botanic Gardens. It’s certainly one of the more unique spaces for a reception though! Please continue scrolling to the bottom of this page if you’d like to see a real wedding at Marnie’s Pavilion at Denver Botanic Gardens.
As you can see from these descriptions and photos, Denver Botanic Gardens can really create the perfect space for your wedding no matter the size. And the myriad of gorgeous plants, gardens, water features, sculptures, and other art throughout means there is no end to the beautiful wedding photos we can create there. The hardest part is figuring out how to include all of the lovely areas you will fall in love with. There are certainly worse problems to have!
