Lake Dillon Family Photography at Sapphire Point in Colorado
Today I’ve got a beautiful Lake Dillon Family Photography session to share. Summit County, Colorado is a frequent place where I photograph families that are traveling to Colorado for their summer vacations. While Summit County is full of incredible ski resorts (Copper Mountain, Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, and Breckenridge are all within a short drive of the lake) with tons of fun and activities, I would say that Lake Dillon is the shining focal point of that area. It’s a huge, sprawling man-made reservoir so calling it “Lake Dillon” is a bit of a misnomer. Semantics aside, it’s gorgeous, whatever you want to call it. It has a ton of random little arms that reach out and create a lot of little inlets to get lost in on your boat. And it also has incredible mountain views surrounding it. I actually enjoy photographing with the Dillon Reservoir off in the distance in the area near Sapphire Point. This allows the water to blend in as part of the backdrop of wildflowers, snow-capped peaks, and a beautiful glimmering lake.
Make Professional Family Portraits a part of your Colorado Vacation
Jonathan got in touch with me earlier in the year as part of his vacation planning in Colorado. He told me that he and his family love to get photos created when they go to beautiful places around the world. I really love that idea because family vacations are often some of the happiest memories that are created in the life of a family. Plus, the kids are only little and live with you for a short amount of time in the grand scheme of things. It makes a lot of sense to me to mix in some awesome locations into your family portraits throughout the years. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Colorado’s scenery makes for pretty awesome holiday card photos!
At Jonathan’s family session we started off a little earlier to catch some photos closer to the water, but we ended up having to wait a little bit for the super bright Colorado sun to dip behind the mountains a little bit to get the softer lighting that I prefer for portraits. However, I love that we got to capture both kinds of light at their session because nothing screams “Colorado” to me more than that bright warm sunshine pouring into a picture. Well, except for maybe capturing beautiful blue mountains off in the distance, but we also made sure we got some of those for them too. It was a really nice evening spent playing and laughing together. Jonathan’s children are really sweet and cute and have really great smiles. I love that they are still at that age where mom and dad can make them laugh really big. I’ve shared a handful of my favorite photos from their warm, sunny, summer family session from Lake Dillon below.
